The Lord Gave and Took

“And he said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.””

1.

WORSHIP AMID THE RUBBLE

Job lost children, flocks, and possessions in a single day, and the first thing he did was fall down and worship. Grief did not cancel reverence.

2.

NAKED HE CAME, NAKED HE RETURNS

Job views his whole life with the honesty of one who knows he brought nothing and takes nothing. That frees his hands to release what was lost.

3.

THE LORD GAVE

Before speaking of loss, Job acknowledges the gift. Everything he had, including what was now gone, came first from God's hand.

4.

THE LORD TOOK AWAY

Job does not blame raiders, storms, or chance — he places even the loss under God's sovereignty, without pretending to understand why.

5.

BLESSED BE THE NAME

The sentence ends in praise, not bitter resignation. Job chooses to bless God before he has a single answer.

6.

BLESS BEFORE YOU UNDERSTAND

Act: before breakfast, name one loss you still do not understand and say aloud, "The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."
