Earnestly I Seek You

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

1.

MY GOD, PERSONALLY

David begins by restating what he already knows: you are my God. This earnest seeking flows from an established relationship, not from distant doubt.

2.

THIRST OF THE SOUL

He describes not curiosity but thirst — a need that aches when unmet. The soul, too, can grow parched without God's presence.

3.

WRITTEN IN THE WILDERNESS

This psalm is born literally in the wilderness of Judah, where David was hiding. The parched landscape around him becomes the exact image of his thirsty soul.

4.

BODY AND SOUL TOGETHER

'My flesh faints for you' includes the body, not just the spirit. Longing for God can be felt as physically as any other hunger.

5.

SEEKING AT DAWN

Seeking God early, before the day fills with other voices, gives the soul's thirst first and best attention, before everything else competes for it.

6.

SEEK HIM FIRST

Act: tomorrow, before picking up your phone or starting your tasks, spend five minutes telling God, in your own words, that your soul thirsts for Him.
