Names He Deserves

“He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.”

1.

AN AVALANCHE OF NAMES

Rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, stronghold, savior — David piles image on image because a single word could never capture who God had been to him.

2.

SUNG NEAR THE END OF LIFE

This song comes after decades of wars, flights, and betrayals — it isn't youthful enthusiasm, it's the seasoned testimony of someone already tested.

3.

EVERY WORD POSSESSIVE

"My rock," "my shield," "my savior" — David isn't speaking of God in general, he's speaking of a God who is his, personally, by experience.

4.

REFUGE BEFORE IT WAS NEEDED

"In whom I take refuge" is an ongoing choice, not a one-time event. David ran to God again and again, and every time found shelter.

5.

SAVED FROM VIOLENCE

The final line is concrete: not an abstract idea of peace, but actual deliverance from actual pursuers who wanted him dead.

6.

GIVE HIM YOUR OWN NAMES

Act: write down three names describing what God has specifically been to you this season, and pray those words back to Him out loud.
