“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

1.

ANOTHER 'I AM' OF JESUS

This is one of the great identity statements of Jesus in John's Gospel, echoing the name of God revealed to Moses. He isn't just teaching about shepherding — he's declaring himself the Shepherd.

2.

GOOD — IN CONTRAST TO OTHERS

In the same chapter, Jesus speaks of thieves and hired hands who flee at danger. 'Good' here isn't just moral quality — it's proven faithfulness where others abandon the flock.

3.

LAYS DOWN LIFE, NOT JUST PROTECTS

An ordinary shepherd risks himself for his sheep — Jesus goes beyond risk and actually gives up his life. This definition of good shepherd already points directly to the cross.

4.

FOR THE SHEEP — FOR YOU

This giving isn't abstract or general — it's 'for the sheep,' for those he knows and calls by name, as the chapter goes on to describe.

5.

LEADERSHIP DEFINED BY SACRIFICE

Jesus redefines what it means to lead well — it isn't commanding from a distance, it's being willing to lose everything for the good of those you lead. His model challenges every common idea of power.

6.

ACT BY TRUSTING THE SHEPHERD TODAY

Act: In a moment of insecurity today, say out loud, 'Jesus is my good shepherd, he already gave his life for me,' and let that truth guide your next decision.
