“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.””
The Samaritan woman had just raised the old dispute over which mountain was the right place to worship. Jesus answers by pointing to something far bigger than geography.
Before talking about how to worship, Jesus defines who is worshiped. God isn't tied to one temple or mountain because, by nature, he is spirit — present everywhere.
Worshiping in spirit doesn't depend on a sacred place or the correct external ritual — it's born from within, from a heart truly engaged with God.
Truth here rejects hypocrisy — worshiping without sincerity, out of mere habit or appearance, doesn't count as real worship. God seeks authenticity, not religious performance.
Jesus doesn't suggest this as one valid preference among several — he says it's necessary. Authentic worship isn't one style among many; it's the only way that actually reaches God.
Act: Before you pray or sing today, pause and check whether your heart is truly engaged and not just repeating words — adjust your attention before continuing.
