As You Wish

“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.”

IN THE MIDDLE OF A SERMON ON ENEMIES

This verse doesn't stand alone — it comes right after Jesus commands loving enemies and doing good to those who hate us. The golden rule is the practical summary of that radical ethic.

2.

THE STARTING POINT IS YOU

Jesus uses your own desire as a compass — he doesn't ask what's fair in the abstract, he asks what you yourself would want to receive. No one needs a complicated manual to know where to start.

3.

ACTION, NOT JUST FEELING

'Do so to them' is a verb of initiative — the golden rule doesn't wait for the other person to move first. It places the responsibility to begin on the one listening.

4.

THE OPPOSITE OF ORDINARY RECIPROCITY

A few verses earlier, Jesus already said even sinners do good to those who do good to them. This rule goes beyond fair exchange — it acts first, without waiting for anything back.

5.

SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND, HARD TO LIVE

No child needs an explanation to understand this sentence — and no adult finds it easy to practice every day. The simplicity of the text doesn't shrink the size of the challenge.

6.

ACT ON THE GOLDEN RULE TODAY

Act: Think of one difficult person in your life today and ask, before reacting to them, 'how would I want to be treated in this situation?' — then act that way first.
