One True Shepherd

“And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.”

1.

AFTER THE SHEPHERDS WHO FAILED

This promise comes right after God exposes the leaders who fed only themselves off the flock — the answer to failed leadership is never abandoning the sheep, it's raising up a faithful shepherd.

2.

ONE, NOT MANY

'One shepherd' stands in contrast to the crowd of self-serving leaders who came before — God isn't promising a committee, but a single, unified, trustworthy leadership.

3.

MY SERVANT DAVID

David had been dead for centuries when Ezekiel wrote this — the promise points beyond the historical king to a descendant who would fulfill the role completely.

4.

TENDING SAID TWICE OVER

'He shall feed them, he shall feed them' repeats the same promise as if to make sure no one doubts it — this shepherd will neglect not a single sheep.

5.

THE MOST QUOTED PROMISE HERE

Among all the oracles in these chapters, it is this messianic image of the Davidic shepherd that echoes loudest into the Gospels — Jesus would call himself the good shepherd.

6.

ACT FOLLOWING THE RIGHT SHEPHERD

Act: Name one decision today you've been trying to solve alone, like a sheep without a shepherd, and consciously hand it over to Christ's care in prayer.
