1.

A PEOPLE FAR FROM HOME

This psalm rises out of the Babylonian exile, a people torn from everything they knew — the grief described here is concrete, not mere poetic flourish.

2.

BY FOREIGN WATERS

Sitting by the waters of a place that isn't home carries its own weight — the surrounding landscape constantly recalls what was left behind.

3.

SITTING DOWN TO WEEP

There's no rush to get over the grief here — the people simply sit and weep, giving real space to mourning before any word of hope.

4.

REMEMBERING ZION

Memory is what triggers the tears — remembering what was good before isn't weakness, it's the natural cost of having loved something deeply.

5.

ROOM FOR LAMENT

Scripture makes room for this kind of sadness without rushing to a resolution — lament has its own legitimate place within faith.

6.

NAME YOUR LONGING

Act: Write in one sentence what you still grieve having lost, and bring that sentence to God in prayer without trying to minimize it.
