When I Am Afraid

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

PSALM 56:3 · ESV
PTDia 178 em Português ESDía 178 en Español ENDay 178 in English
1.

FEAR IS ADMITTED

David does not fake a courage he does not feel. He names the fear openly, writing this while being pursued and captured by enemies.

2.

WHEN, NOT IF

The verse says 'when I am afraid,' not 'if.' David already expected fear to return, and planned in advance where he would turn.

3.

TRUST AS THE RESPONSE

Trust does not automatically erase fear — it is a choice made in the very moment fear appears. Both can exist together in the same instant.

4.

IN YOU, NOT IN ME

David does not say he will trust his own strength or strategy. The object of trust is clearly God — outside himself, outside circumstances.

5.

A REPEATED HABIT

This phrase repeats almost word for word later in the same psalm. Trusting amid fear is not a one-time event, but a practice renewed again and again.

6.

CHOOSE TRUST NOW

Act: name out loud the specific fear you feel right now, then say, looking to God: 'I put my trust in you,' repeating it until your body relaxes.
