“And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”
Before this verse came a great wind and an earthquake — and the LORD was in neither one. God doesn't always show up where we expect.
It's striking that the same prophet who saw fire fall from heaven at Carmel now learns that fire alone is no guarantee of God's presence.
After all the spectacle, God chooses to speak in a low whisper — nearly silence. You have to be still to not miss it.
The prophet arrives at this mountain fleeing, discouraged, asking to die. God doesn't rebuke him — He comes to speak softly to a weary heart.
After the whisper, God repeats the same question as before: "What are you doing here?" He draws near first; only then does He ask.
Act: set aside five minutes of total silence today, no phone or noise, and simply listen — that may be where God wants to whisper something to you.
