“And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.”
The original image is of someone limping, trying to walk in two directions at once. Spiritual indecision always injures whoever tries to live that way.
Elijah issues this challenge before all the people, in a public confrontation against the prophets of Baal. Truth sometimes needs a visible stage.
"If the LORD is God, follow him" leaves no room for a comfortable middle ground. True faith demands an answer, not a neutral stance.
"The people did not answer him a word" is the sad portrait of people caught between tradition and convenience, without courage to decide.
The people's silence sets the stage for the fire that falls from heaven shortly after — God answers where people hesitate.
Act: name one area of your life where you're still trying to please two masters, and choose today, in prayer, to follow God without reservation there.
