“And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents.”
The fracture doesn't start with the people, it starts with Rehoboam refusing to hear wise counsel from the elders. Pride in leadership always costs dearly.
"What portion do we have in David?" is the moment ten tribes declare they no longer feel represented. Words of rupture carry historical weight.
The cry "to your tents" echoes an ancient expression of refusing to follow a king — the people choose to walk away rather than reconcile.
This collapse had already been announced to Solomon because of his idolatry. Consequences of old decisions sometimes arrive in later generations.
A little humility from Rehoboam would have changed this whole story. Many real-life ruptures also begin with one small refusal to listen.
Act: think of one person whose counsel you've been ignoring out of pride, and seek them out today to truly listen before you respond.
