“Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.””
Jacob wrestled alone, on the bank of the Jabbok, until daybreak. Some of God's transformations only come after hours you would rather not face.
Jacob meant "deceiver" or "heel-grabber" — a name that described a whole life of manipulation. Changing the name declared that old identity had come to an end.
Jacob's whole life had been conflict — with Esau, with Laban, and now with God Himself. Israel sums up that entire history of striving turned into something new.
Jacob walked away from this fight limping, his hip out of joint, and he's still described as the one who prevailed. Sometimes winning with God leaves a visible mark for the rest of your life.
Israel would stop being just one man's name and become the name of an entire people, chosen by God. One night of personal struggle shaped the identity of generations.
Act: Before breakfast, write down one old label still attached to your name, and pray asking God to replace it with the identity He has already given you in Christ.
