“And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel.”
God had already given Jacob this name at the Jabbok, but He returns to confirm it at Bethel. What God declares over you once, He's also willing to say again.
God acknowledges, "Your name is Jacob," before declaring the new name. Transformation doesn't instantly erase every trace of who you were — it redirects who you're becoming.
This encounter happens at the same place where Jacob, decades earlier, had dreamed of a ladder to heaven while fleeing home. God closes a circle He Himself began many years before.
The emphatic form of this sentence shows God establishing something permanent, not just a passing nickname. The identity God gives is built to last, even when you waver.
From this point on, Israel becomes the name of God's entire people throughout history. An identity confirmed by God extends far beyond a single life.
Act: Before breakfast, read aloud again one promise or identity God has already given you, and thank Him for confirming it once more today.
