Believed and Counted Righteous

“And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

1.

THE VERSE PAUL QUOTES

This verse becomes, centuries later, the foundation of Paul's doctrine of justification by faith. One sentence written about a man in the desert holds up the entire gospel of grace.

2.

BELIEVING BEFORE SEEING

God had just promised Abram offspring like the stars — and he still didn't have a single child. Abram believed the word before any evidence backed it up.

3.

CREDITED, NOT EARNED

"Counted" is accounting language — something entered onto Abram's ledger that he himself didn't produce. Righteousness was a gift recorded in his name, not a wage he earned.

4.

FAITH, NOT WORKS

The text doesn't say Abram built an altar or offered a sacrifice to be counted righteous. He simply believed — and that was enough for God.

5.

A FAITH THAT WOULD STILL WAVER

Soon after this verse, Abram would still make mistakes and doubt again. The righteousness credited to him didn't depend on perfect faith, but on real faith.

6.

BELIEVE THE PROMISE TODAY

Act: Before breakfast, write down one promise of God you haven't yet seen fulfilled — and say out loud, "I believe the LORD," just as Abram did.
