The Reason for Hope

“but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”

1.

HONOR CHRIST AS HOLY IN YOUR HEART

Before any answer to others, Peter asks for an internal shift — Christ must be Lord in your heart before he's ever defended in words.

2.

ALWAYS PREPARED

This isn't an improvised answer for a rare emergency — it's a permanent state of readiness, expecting the question to come at any moment.

3.

A REASON, NOT JUST A FEELING

Peter expects you to articulate why you have hope, not just say you feel something good — faith calls for clarity of thought too.

4.

TO ANYONE WHO ASKS

The command excludes no one — friend, stranger, skeptic, the merely curious — all deserve a prepared answer, not a defensive reaction.

5.

GENTLENESS IN THE ANSWERING

Content matters, but tone matters just as much — Peter asks for gentleness and respect, because truth without kindness convinces few.

6.

ACT BY PREPARING TODAY

Act: Write out in three short sentences the reason for your hope in Christ, so you can repeat it gently the next time someone asks.
