“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
'Wages' is workplace language — you don't get death by bad luck, it's the logical outcome of what sin actually produces when the bill comes due.
'Free gift' is the exact opposite of wages — no work can buy it, only open hands to receive it from the one offering it.
This verse sets side by side the destiny of whoever goes it alone and whoever receives life through Christ — there's no third road.
The life offered isn't just more time — it's a different quality of life, lived in Christ Jesus, that starts now and never ends.
The gift doesn't float free in the air — it's located in one specific person. Outside of Christ, there's no access to the eternal life described here.
Act: Say out loud today that you receive eternal life as a gift, not as something you're trying to earn, and thank God specifically for it.
