Pity for Nineveh

“And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?””

1.

A QUESTION, NOT A HARSH REBUKE

God doesn't shout at Jonah for his resentment — he closes the book with a gentle question, inviting the prophet to reconsider his own heart.

2.

A GREAT CITY, NOT JUST A DESERVING ONE

'That great city' repeats a phrase used earlier in the book — God sees Nineveh by its scale and need, not by what it deserves.

3.

ONE HUNDRED TWENTY THOUSAND NAMED

God gives a concrete number of people — Nineveh isn't an abstract statistic to him, it's a multitude of real lives he knows one by one.

4.

WHO DO NOT KNOW RIGHT FROM LEFT

That description of innocence or moral confusion shows God recognizing human frailty rather than treating every sinner as equally hardened.

5.

EVEN THE ANIMALS MATTER

Mentioning 'much cattle' at the end reveals the breadth of God's care — his compassion extends beyond people, to the creation around them.

6.

ACT WITH COMPASSION FOR WHO YOU AVOID

Act: Think of one group or person you secretly believe doesn't deserve God's grace, and pray today for genuine compassion toward them.
