A Famine of the Word

““Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine on the land — not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”

1.

'THE DAYS ARE COMING'

The phrase introduces a future certainty decreed by God himself — not a vague threat, but a solemn announcement of something that will surely come.

2.

A FAMINE UNLIKE ANY OTHER

God explicitly rules out physical hunger — what he describes is more serious: a people surrounded by resources but cut off from his word.

3.

HEARING THE WORDS OF THE LORD

The object of this famine is very specific — not general knowledge, but God's own spoken word, the very revelation the people had so often ignored.

4.

CONSEQUENCE OF PAST REJECTION

Amos's context shows silenced prophets and ignored messages — the coming famine is the natural echo of a word that was despised while it was still available.

5.

A SEARCH WITHOUT AN ANSWER

The verses that follow describe people running from place to place seeking the word of the LORD and not finding it — a portrait of a missed opportunity.
