Belonging to Each Other

“I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine; he grazes among the lilies.”

SONG OF SOLOMON 6:3 · ESV

1.

A REFRAIN THAT RETURNS

This phrase appears more than once in the poem, with small variations — repetition in Hebrew poetry marks what the heart most needs to reaffirm.

2.

I AM HIS FIRST

The order matters — before claiming her beloved as hers, she declares herself his; secure belonging starts with recognizing whose you are.

3.

AND HE IS MINE TOO

True love isn't only one-sided giving — it's reciprocity: she also receives, is also loved back, also has someone who chooses her.

4.

HE GRAZES AMONG THE LILIES

The closing image is peace, not anxious possession — belonging to each other produces rest, a beautiful and unhurried place.

5.

A PATTERN FOR ALL LOVE

This mutual exchange — I am yours, and you are mine — models both human marriage and the covenant between God and his people, where both sides give themselves.

6.

DECLARE THE BELONGING

Act: Tell God out loud, "I am yours, and the Lord is mine" — and if you're married, repeat a version of these words to your spouse today.
