A Sleep That Rests

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”

1.

THE FINAL LINE OF A LAMENT

David writes this psalm in the middle of distress, yet ends it with a verse about sleep — faith doesn't ignore pain, it rests in spite of it.

2.

IN PEACE I WILL LIE DOWN

Lying down in peace isn't the absence of threat — it's the decision to trust even while danger still exists nearby.

3.

AND SLEEP

Deep, real sleep is the natural result of that trust — anxiety steals sleep, but faith gives it back.

4.

YOU ALONE, O LORD

David doesn't credit his safety to walls, guards, or circumstances — the exclusivity of that trust is what makes it so firm.

5.

SAFETY THAT DOESN'T DEPEND ON ME

'You make me dwell in safety' places the responsibility on God — David rests because the job of protecting him isn't his to carry.

6.

SLEEP AS PRAYER TONIGHT

Act: before you sleep tonight, pray this verse out loud and hand God the specific worry that is stealing your sleep.
