My Son, My Son

“And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!””

1.

THE NAME REPEATED FIVE TIMES

David can't stop saying "Absalom" and "my son" — grief overflows into repetition because no single sentence can hold the loss.

2.

HE WENT UP TO WEEP ALONE

Even as king, David seeks out a private space for grief. Weeping alone isn't weakness — it's honesty before God.

3.

LOVE STRONGER THAN BETRAYAL

Absalom rebelled, tried to seize the throne, nearly destroyed David — and still the father wishes he had died instead. A father's love doesn't extinguish under betrayal.

4.

AN ECHO OF THE CROSS

"Would I had died instead of you" faintly foreshadows a Father who actually did give up His Son so rebels could live.

5.

GRIEF IS NOT SHAMEFUL

Scripture records the king's weeping without judging it. God has room for your grief exactly as it is, with no rush for you to compose yourself.

6.

WEEP BEFORE HIM

Act: if you carry a loss or a broken relationship, set aside ten minutes today to weep before God with no rush to pull yourself together.
