“But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
Ruth already had an easy road back home. Her refusal to leave is the first sign of a love that chooses to stay, even without guarantees.
She does not ask for a sure destination, only Naomi's direction. Real love follows the person before it knows the place.
Ruth, a Moabite, gives up her national identity to join herself to Israel. Belonging to God always costs belonging to something old.
Loyalty to Naomi becomes faith in Naomi's God. We often arrive at faith by following someone who already carries it.
This vow of loyalty opens the door for Ruth to enter the line of David, and later of Christ. God weaves foreign faithfulness into His own story.
Act: think of one relationship or commitment you have been tempted to walk away from, and pray for grace to make Ruth's vow there.
