PRAY THEN ACT
DAY 289The One They Pierced · Oct 16, 2026

They Will Look on Me

““And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”

1.

A POURING OUT ON EVERYONE

God promises to pour this spirit out on the house of David and on all the people of Jerusalem — kings and ordinary citizens receive the same transforming grace together.

2.

GRACE AND PLEAS FOR MERCY

The spirit poured out isn't one of condemnation, it's grace — the genuine repentance that follows is born from mercy received first, not fear imposed.

3.

ME, THE ONE THEY PIERCED

God speaks in the first person and identifies himself with the one who was pierced — one of the Old Testament's most startling statements about who truly bears the wound.

4.

AS ONE MOURNS AN ONLY CHILD

The comparison chosen is the most painful possible — grief for an only child, the kind of loss no parent can replace or minimize.

5.

FULFILLED AT THE CROSS

John's gospel directly quotes this verse when describing the crucifixion, showing that this prophesied mourning found its literal fulfillment in the pierced Jesus.

6.

LOOK ON THE ONE PIERCED

Act: Set aside a moment today to deliberately look at the cross in prayer, and let grace, not guilt, produce in you a sincere grief for what he carried.
